De inflatie beheersen is de hoofddoelstelling van het monetair beleid. De lage inflatiecijfers van de afgelopen jaren tonen aan dat het niet vanzelfsprekend is de inflatie te stabiliseren. Inflatiecijfers waren recent meermaals verrassend. Op mondiaal niveau reageerde de inflatie gematigd op de grote recessie, maar ze bleef aanhoudend onder de doelstelling tijdens het herstel. Tegen die achtergrond is het niet verrassend dat de inflatieverwachtingen fluctueren tussen de credibiliteit van de inflatiedoelstelling en de persistentie van de huidige inflatiedynamiek. In België liet de inflatietendens ongewone afwijkingen van het gemiddelde van het eurogebied optekenen. Deze vaststellingen hebben vragen doen rijzen over de bijdrage van gereguleerde prijscomponenten, de doorberekening van kostenmatiging en de disciplinerende kracht van het concurrentievermogen aan alle sectoren van de economie.
