With the war raging in Ukraine, Germany’s economic success model has come to an end. For decades, the domestic economy had benefited from cheap energy and globalisation. But not any more. The German economy is not just facing a hard winter, but also an extensive list of structural challenges. Germany is now paying the economic price for not reforming and investing enough in the recent past. And for excessive political naivety. It is probably the biggest economic challenge for Germany since the country’s reunification.

ING Chief Economist Carsten Brzeski gives an overview of the German economy’s biggest problems, but is also looking for a light at the end of the tunnel.
