Nomenclature and codes

This section describes the commodity codes to be used in the Intrastat declarations.

Where to find a list of commodity codes?

Each year, the Regulation including the new lists under the tariff and statistical nomenclature and the Common Customs Tariff is published in the Official Journal.

How to find a commodity code?

There are several possibilities :

  1. Use the search engine of your internet browser by entering HS code (for “Harmonized System code”) or CN8 (for “8-digit Combined Nomenclature”), followed by the name of the product (or a synonym) and/or its characteristics (e.g. “HS code Covid” to find the code of the Covid 19 vaccine).
Check if the code you have found through your internet browser is correct by consulting the Official Journal of the Combined Nomenclature on the European Commission website (under « Quick Links », click on « Combined nomenclature »), which is the reference for commodity codes.

  1. Consult the European customs portal.

  1. Ask your supplier for information. Suggest to your supplier that he states the commodity code according to the Combined Nomenclature on every invoice in the future. This can also be useful for him.

  2. Contact your company’s purchasing department (which ordered the product externally) or the sales department (which manufactures or sells the product).
