CAP en persoonlijkelevenssfeer

The National Bank of Belgium (NBB) is responsible for processing the personal data retained in the Central Point of Contact for accounts and financial contracts (CPC) database.

The NBB processes these personal data in strict compliance with both Belgian and European privacy rules:

  • Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation - GDPR);
  • the Act of 30 July 2018 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data (only available in Dutch and French);
  • the statutory and regulatory framework governing the CPC.

Precautionary measures

Various precautionary measures have been put in place to protect the privacy of all persons involved.

Pursuant to these measures, all persons:

  • are informed by their financial institution, upon the opening of a bank account or the conclusion of a financial agreement, that certain data will be transmitted to the CPC;
  • are granted, upon request, free access to the data registered in their name in the CPC;
  • may request the correction or deletion of their data in the CPC free of charge, should this information prove to be incorrect. Such a request should be addressed to the financial institution that submitted the data to the CPC.

Moreover, data for which the ten-year retention period has expired are permanently deleted.

These measures apply to both natural and legal persons.
