Online gambling: weekly deposit limit lowered to €200

In order to curb online gambling problems, the maximum amount that can be deposited in a gambling account per week will be lowered from €500  to €200. .  Players who wish to obtain a higher deposit limit must apply to the Gaming Commission. So players should not contact the CICR directly with regard to the raising of their deposit limit.

The current deposit limit in Belgium for online gambling is €500 euro per week. A recently adopted royal decree of 19 June 2022 lowers this weekly limit to €200 as from autumn 2022.

Role of the Gaming Commission

Players who wish to obtain a higher deposit limit must apply to the Gaming Commission. Within three working days from receipt of such a request, the Commission will consult the Central Individual Credit Register (CICR) to verify if the player is registered as a bad debtor. If this is not the case, the Commission will authorise an increase in the deposit limit, up to an amount of the player’s choosing.

Please note that players should not contact the CICR directly with regard to the raising of their deposit limit. All requests must be submitted through the Gaming Commission, the sole body authorised by law to grant exceptions to the general rule.

Protection of the most vulnerable players

The lower deposit limit of €200 per week is intended to protect the most vulnerable players from themselves. A survey showed that up to 180,000 Belgians suffer from gambling problems, with some 50,000 considered to be severely addicted.

For more information, please consult the royal decree of 19 June 2022 establishing the terms and conditions for consultation of the Central Individual Credit Register by the Gaming Commission and amending the provisions on the limitation of online gambling (FR-NL).
