NBB – a sustainable company

The National Bank of Belgium (NBB) has been engaged in efforts in the sustainability arena for quite a while now, and its approach is reflected in the way it and its workforce factor in their impact on the environment, as well as in its interventions in the financial markets and even in its research projects.

Three-star ecodynamic organisation

Ecodynamic label

In 2019 Bruxelles Environnement (also known as IBGE/BIM) awarded the National Bank the “Ecodynamic organisation” label (3 stars) for the fourth time, in recognition of the great efforts made by the National Bank and its staff in the environmental sphere.

Certified carbon-neutral company

Aiming to make an active contribution to the climate debate, NBB has its climate impact calculated. In 2017, this came to 9,488 tonnes of CO2 equivalents,[1] equalling the emissions of 932 Belgians.

To offset unavoidable emissions, NBB supports four certified climate projects:

  • Green Sahel climate project certified by Plan Vivo, which aims to return pastures to the Sahel region through soil rehabilitation
  • Gold Standard-certified cookstove projects to reduce biomass usage
  • Gold Standard-certified Paradigm Project combines improved cookstoves and water treatment
  • Gold Standard-certified Çatalca 60MW Wind Power Project aims to encourage the generation of renewable energy in Turkey

On the calculations of CO2logic, a Belgian company specialising in calculating, reducing and offsetting climate impact, the Bank’s support of these climate projects helped ensure its carbon neutrality in 2017.

Of course, NBB will continue to actively pursue carbon emission reductions. Its fleet of company cars, for instance, already consists in part of electric and hybrid cars, while the Bank also consumes 100% green power.

[1] The climate impact is calculated as the emission of all greenhouse gases (e.g. CO2, CH4, N20), converting these to CO2 equivalents. In addition to energy consumption of buildings, these climate impact calculations include sources of emissions such as loss of refrigerant gases, mobility, meals, office materials, paper for printing banknotes, waste and water consumption.

Good food label

The NBB's company restaurant has been awarded the Canteen Good Food label (2 forks) by Bruxelles Environnement.
