The Governor directs the National Bank of Belgium. He presides over the Board of Directors and the Council of Regency, he has their decisions implemented and represents the Bank in legal proceedings. The Governor is also a member of the ECB Governing Council, which takes decisions on monetary policy for the euro area.
He is appointed by the King for a renewable term of five years. He may be removed from office only if he has been guilty of serious misconduct or if he no longer fulfils the conditions required for the performance of his duties.
Mr Jan Smets holds the office of Governor since 11 March 2015. By a Royal Decree of 10 March 2014, Mr Jan Smets was appointed for a five year term beginning on 11 March 2015.
