The ESCB's statistical function is based on a legal mandate to collect all necessary and relevant data in order to produce and disseminate impartial, reliable, appropriate, timely, consistent and accessible statistics in the areas under the ESCB's responsibility. Public commitment on European Statistics by the ESCB. The National Bank subscribes to the "Policy regarding the reuse of ESCB statistics" as communicated on September 3th, 2012 by the ESCB. However the Bank may reconsider its position in case large investments or costs are involved.

National accounts

The annual national accounts are published in several series. An initial estimate of the annual accounts, based on the quarterly accounts, is released in April (an online publication is available at the end of March). The detailed accounts and the tables featuring data per branch of activity and per institutional sector (an electronic version of general government accounts can be consulted in September) are available at the end of October (end-September in electronic form), followed by the supply and use tables. The annual accounts cycle is rounded off with the satellite account of non-profit institutions which is published at the end of the year.

The quarterly accounts are released in three stages. A first flash estimate of economic growth is made 30 days after the end of the quarter. This figure is reviewed 70 days following the end of the quarter and put out on the National Bank of Belgium's website together with detailed statistics on the composition of gross domestic product (value added, revenue, expenditure) and on the labour market. Statistics drawn from the quarterly accounts of the institutional sectors are issued 105 days after the end of the quarter. Lastly, 120 days after the quarter ends, the final, full estimate of the main economic aggregates is published.
