I found banknotes and coins denominated in old Belgian francs; where can I exchange them?

All banknotes issued by the Bank since 1944 remain exchangeable, without a limitation in time,

  • either at the counters of the National Bank in Brussels or at one of its branches.
  • or by sending these to the following address after having filled the "Exchange belgian banknotes" document:

    National Bank of Belgium
    Central Cash Office
    Bld de Berlaimont 14
    1000 Brussels

In that case the Central Cash Office sends the equivalent in euros by Mail or credits the account of the depositor.

Belgian 20-franc and 50-franc banknotes issued by the Treasury and coins denominated in Belgian francs cannot be exchanged.
