The banknotes and coins are issued jointly by all the central banks of the euro area; in Belgium’s case, that task falls to the National Bank. Banknotes and coins denominated in euro were first placed in circulation on 1 January 2002.

The seven euro banknotes are identical in all euro area countries.

The eight euro coins can be used anywhere, throughout the euro area countries.

A brief history of the euro
The euro appeared in the pockets of residents of the euro area on 1 January 2002. This was the culmination of a process which began with the European unification movement.
