In accordance with the current legislation, intelligent banknote neutralisation systems (IBNS) are used to secure the transportation of cash in Belgium.
These anti-theft cases render the banknotes unusable by spraying them with ink in the event of unauthorised (attempted) opening. The use of these cases is therefore a preventive measure designed to ensure that criminals cannot profit from their crime. This reduces the risk of retailers or other professional cash handlers to become the victims of crime.
An ink-stained banknote is probably a stolen banknote. Do not accept it under any circumstances!
Ink-stained banknotes cannot be exchanged, neither by commercial banks nor by the National Bank of Belgium!
