National Bank of Belgium to host high-level economic and financial conference

How have we managed the financial crisis and what lessons can be drawn? Nobel Prize winner Jean Tirole, ECB Executive Board member Peter Praet, the National Bank of Belgium’s Governor Jan Smets and banking specialist Mathias Dewatripont from the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management, are inviting a gathering of world-renowned decision-makers and experts to find some answers to this question at a conference in Brussels on 5 and 6 November.

On 5 and 6 November, the National Bank of Belgium’s Auditorium will be welcoming a unique gathering of decision-makers, scientists and experts from the economic and financial world. They will spend a day and a half working together, through various panels and presentations, on the question of “Managing financial crises: where do we stand?”. The experts will be debating such topics as risk-sharing in the European Monetary Union, governance of the euro area, the role of central banks as lenders of last resort, solvency problems and bank bail-outs, as well as the international monetary system.

The speakers and panelists all represent world-level institutions. Apart from Nobel Prize winner Jean Tirole, former European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and the ECB’s Vice-President Luis de Guindos, top experts from such institutions as the London School of Economics, Harvard University, Bocconi University, Max Planck Institute, Geneva University, Cass Business School, Columbia University, the Petersson Institute for international Economics, California-Berkeley University, European University Institute, Solvay Business School, the OECD, CEPR, the IMF, the European Commission, the BIS, Blackrock, the National Bank of Belgium and various ECB bodies have confirmed their participation.
